My husband is a genius

We made a display board for our church's ministry "fair" this week. It's a time to encourage people to volunteer in our various ministries. Anyway, the "theme" is the Wright brothers, and Jon made this awesome display. It's a mosaic of their plane, and it's made of tiny pictures from our middle school group. We're calling our table "Learning to Fly"--he came up with that, too. Anyway, it's a very good thing that I married someone creative, because I'm afraid my display would've been terribly cheesy and cliche.

Baby shower theories

Sarah once posted a list of things that she'd ideally love to give new moms at showers. I've been thinking of some things that I'd love to get, although I realize that these ideas are probably somewhat difficult to just give. And I'm mostly thinking of these for the first month or two--not for a year or anything.
1. Netflix subscription
2. Gardener (or someone to just mow the lawn)
3. Maid
4. Laundry service
5. Car wash coupons

Not subscription-type things:
1. Pizza Hut/Papa John's gift card
2. Frozen dinners/pizzas/corn dogs (quick meals to fix when the church ones stop coming and everybody goes home--which won't really happen for me)
I could eat my weight in peanut butter.

Thursday

I had to put a day between the actual events and the retelling of them, so that I don't add high blood pressure to my repertoire. I should have commissioned my sister to write this--no doubt it'd be much funnier. This is how my day went yesterday:

I get to school and remember that it's progress report day. Now, I had printed out the grade sheets to staple to the actual progress reports, but I hadn't filled my homeroom class's out yet. Yes, we are still in the Dark Ages here in Louisiana--it's a carbon-copy form that the students carry around all day. Anyway, I spend some time before school/during first period getting that done.

During second period, my students are working in groups on their plays that they're presenting in Reader's Theater format starting Monday. I have one student who was transferred to my class back in March who is special ed--he has ADHD. He also has a mother who works for the school district. Oh, and did I mention that he's had 17 referrals and is currently on contract for his behavior (meaning that the next referrable offense will send him to alternative school)? Oh, and he has a behavior modification plan--tells me exactly what I should do/how I should handle any behavior problems. His mom insists everything is due to his impulsivity... Yep, a real gem. Anyway, as I'm circulating around the room monitoring the students (to make sure that they've stopped reading the stage directions as lines), I hear, "...no f***ing way!" shouted from his dear, sweet lips. I call him up to my desk, ask him to repeat himself. He claims not to have said anything. I ask (in shock), "Did you swear in my class?" And he still denies it. So I call up three students one at a time, from different areas of the room, and ask them "What did he say (so as not to lead the witness)?" They all confirmed it. Then I emailed the special ed teacher who knows him backward and forward and ask if I should send him to the office (I'm sure there's some step I've missed). She said yes, so I send him. A few minutes later, I send a student with the documentation. That student returns and tells me that the kid is hiding in the bathroom, that he never went to the office. So I call up there, and the SRO is sent to look for him--we find him about 5 minutes later, when he merges with the other students changing classes and attempts to go into his 3rd period class.
So now it's my planning period...ha! His mother is immediately at school. She's supposed to be picking him up because breaking contract is grounds for suspension until the expulsion hearing. But of course she wants to talk to me & our asst. principal. She's insisting it's because of his impulsivity and feels that the punishment (alt. ed) doesn't fit the crime (which in her eyes is just the swearing incident). We explain that this is #18--we don't send all potty-mouths to the alternative school. Anyway, in this meeting the student says that he swore because all of the other boys in his group were swearing--which to me means it's not impulsive, it sure sounds premeditated. Oh, and right when I return to my room I get the call about failing the glucose test.
4th period--I get called in to the big meeting. I don't remember what acronym is assigned to this meeting, but basically because he's special ed, this meeting is held to determine if the problem was due to his disability or if he truly deserves to have a hearing. The behavior strategist starts out on the mom's side, which is the complete opposite of what I've been told they typically do--she must be scared of mom, too. And they say that I didn't follow the behavior plan because he's supposed to get a warning, and then after the second offense he's to be sent to the office. I'm sure you can imagine what I said, because you're all having the same response right now. I also argued that it would send a terrible message to the rest of my class if he just showed up in class the next day, having received no punishment. We went around & around for an hour & a half, and I could vent more about that meeting, but I'll spare you.
5th period--I've acutally missed all but 10 minutes of 5th period, so I scramble to get all of the progress reports signed/filled out. I don't finish 7 of them.
6th period--Finish the progress reports from the last class and somehow get them out to the kids wherever they are now.
7th period--This class is now in groups. One of my strange little needy girls is in tears screaming at her group. (On a side note, she cried & left class the day before because she claims stage fright, even though reader's theater involves sitting in a desk facing the class reading from a script). I call her over to see what the problem is, and she very emotionally tells me that she wants to have a big part or no part. I'm trying to rationalize this based on the explosive events from the day before. In the middle of this ordeal she switches back to her stage fright story. While mediating this argument, I glance over to see a boys group standing up shouting profanity at one another. It's another of my students with a lovely temper, and he's just lost it. Feeling like I'm on the brink, I tell the entire group to go to the office. I call the office and tell them that I'm just sending them in order to keep my sanity--they're having group issues & swearing at one another. I finally calm spazoid down and we figure out a solution with 7 minutes for me to get the progress reports done.
A bell has never sounded so sweet.

Pincushion

Poop. I failed my glucose test (by a mere 11 points). Now I have to use one of my precious sick days on Tuesday. I have to fast after midnight, get my blood drawn at 9am, drink another drink, and then get my blood drawn at 10, 11, and 12. It's funny, because my main concern is not the needles--it's the starving. The same people who are telling me that I can't eat for 12 hours must be the same people who make the Motherhood maternity clothes that you can't put in the dryer. Who does these things to pregnant people?

A Series of Unfortunate Events

I got my movie back today. I don't remember if I posted the middle of the story where a bunch of students were telling me who had stolen it. I told the girl that I'd be happy if she just brought it back, and I wouldn't send her to the office or anything. She didn't acknowledge if she had taken it or not, she just stared at me. A few days later she was walking down the hall and I casually asked, "Did you bring my movie?" To which she replied, "No, I forgot it," thus giving herself away. I've asked her every couple of days, and today, she brought it back.

28-week checkup

Well, it was my turn to drink "the drink," and I'll agree that it wasn't too bad. Mine was fruit punch, and it basically tasted exactly like Hawaiian punch. My stabbing pain is to do with my rib--where the cartilage joins the bone. And there's nothing much I can do about it besides heat & tylenol. Yippee. While I was waiting to have my blood drawn, I went downstairs and pre-registered. Which is great for an anxious little planner like myself. Oh, and I forgot to ask so I'm not sure how much weight I've gained--sorry for those of you that have been charting it :). I am on the two-week rotation now, though, so maybe my next update will be more enlightening.

Math

So my sister's blog had me doing some pretty scary math, and I'm due in like 83 days. Holy crap.

Slacker

I feel like a blogger slacker, and I've been racking my brains trying to figure out what to write about. Not much is going on. Jon & I go to work, Jon comes home and does homework, I tutor either at school or at Sylvan. Nothing really exciting. We did look at some homes on Saturday because there was a big "Tour of Homes" thing going on--you know, just for fun. To stir up lust and envy and all of that.
On the pregnancy end of things, I've had my first experience of "I don't want to be pregnant any more." I have this stabbing/burning pain in my ribs on my right side. It's superficial--not organs or anything. But it won't go away, and it REALLY hurts. I mean, I try not to be a wimp, but it was enough to make me call my doctor on Monday morning because it kept me awake all night. I promise I've tried everything--heat, ice, stretching, lying in various positions. I wonder if it isn't a muscle/ligament that isn't stretching correctly or is mad at me or something. The nurse's theory is that it could be inflamed cartilage which can sometimes happen, and is fixed with steroids (oh good, something new for me). I told the nurse that this diagnosis sounded made up, and I wouldn't believe anyone that told me they had it. Anyway, they wanted me to come in today, just to make sure, but since I have my regular appointment tomorrow, I'm going to tough it out (with Tylenol PM, thank you very much). Anyway, that's more whining than news.
Random thing--while typing this, I glanced out the window (just behind the computer screen), and saw Kronk trotting by. Ummmmmmmm....not good. Luckily he was the only one out. But not good that he somehow opened the gate. Granted, it did just rain today, and everything is pretty soggy, which may have been to his advantage.

miss cranky-pants

So, how much personality is experienced when a child is still in the womb? I'm hoping that the answer is "not much," because otherwise we may have a bossy one on our hands. This little girl definitely lets you know if you're invading "her" space. I mean, if I happen to be sitting or whatever in such a way that my leg is pressing on my abdomen, she gives a few swift kicks to let me know. Someone please tell me that this is how all babies are...

Latest freebie

The same teacher that gave us the crib also gave us her pack & play. I am sooooooooo excited, because these are worth $100 or so, and I've heard that they are invaluable. The bottom can be raised up (as pictured) for a bassinet-type effect, or it can be low, for when they're older.
Kronk's favorite stuffed animal is sleeping in it right now... (we were playing fetch & Jon accidentally threw it in there, and Kronk has refused to get it out).

Drawing conclusions

We read a play last week as part of our drama unit in Reading. Today's test asked them to draw some conclusions about characters based on their actions in the play. I received several "art" projects...and we had to have a talk about how I didn't mean literal drawing.

Hooray for snow days

We have a snow day built into our school calendar each year. If we don't use it, we get out of school a day earlier. So now, the last day for students is Tuesday, May 23rd, and my last day is Wednesday, the 24th. Hooray!

Faculty/alumni vs. students

Student: Mrs. Steele, are you playing in the basketball game?
Mrs. Steele: Let's think this through. I'm 5'5", white, and pregnant. I think I'll sit this one out.

And let's just say I'm glad I didn't play--our assistant principal ended up with 7 stitches in his head from when he dove for a loose ball into the bleachers.

Track meet

How come the day that I have to work the track meet and sit in the sun for three hours is the same day that it's 93 degrees?

ALS

Jon gets to spend the next 5 weeks (or 5 1/2 or something) at Airman Leadership School. Luckily, it's located here at Barksdale. He'll earn 10 college credits (and consequently his AA from the AF Community College) in a variety of areas--from business management to public speaking. Granted, this means more homework for someone who is already in school. On the plus side, he gets to stay in the air conditioning instead of being out in the 90-degree April weather. Oh, and we get to go to a nifty graduation dinner in May--I have to find a tent/dress to go with the fancy-pants blues he has to wear.

Easter according to C. S. Lewis

Yesterday for our middle school Sunday school class, we did the Easter story via "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe". We showed clips of the movie and asked questions/had a discussion about how it related to Jesus' sacrifice. Overall I think it went very well, mostly thanks to my amazing husband and his tecnical and lesson planning/researching skills.

Remnants are too tempting

So since I finished making my mom's quilt last night, I thought I'd use part of my lovely day off buying fabric for my sister's (or brother's) quilt. I really didn't have much luck in the flannel department...even the full price fabric wasn't what I was looking for. And so I wandered over to look at the remnants. As you can see, I discovered quite a bargain (you never can tell)--15 fabrics for $13. Granted, only 5 of them are for Jeff/Cindy, but won't the others make a cute baby quilt...?

And the fleeced was irresistible, but at $5/yard, I just bought one yard. Luckily I don't have to do any sewing with it--just trim the selvage (I think that's what it's called) off.

Kronk says hi

When you're trying to look for cool things about Louisiana (in the midst of a very humid day, especially for April), you can always look to the lizards...
