Movies

I was discussing the Oscars with my brother a few nights ago. It is his tradition to see all of the nominated films for best pictures. I was only able to accomplish this feat one year, and it meant seeing a movie on Oscar Sunday afternoon by myself. Anyway, I was curious as to whether he'd continue this and go see "Brokeback Mountain" (even though the nominations weren't out at the time). He's not going to, and I have to agree--I don't think you could pay me to see that movie. It isn't that I have anything against gay people--I'm not psycho prejudiced, it's just that I think I like my gay guys funny. I mean, show me an episode of "Queer Eye," and I'm laughing hilariously. The guy on Extreme Makeover--hilarious. I just don't really want to see a drama about gay guys. Gross.

Anyway, Jon and I were trying to expand our horizons tonight by watching a few of the nominees, but there aren't too many out on video yet. We rented Crash, and in a moment of weakness I picked up "The Man," because I think it looks hilarious. We'll see. We wanted to see "Syriana," "Good Night and Good Luck," or "Capote," but I have to wait until March for Capote and "Good Night, and Good Luck." Who knows when the other will be on video, because it hasn't been in theaters that long. Oh well.

Okay, I made the videos public. Maybe now they'll work! I can't decide whether I should feel silly, or that these videos may not be worth all of the hassle.
See, the weird thing is, when I go to my blog site, I can see all of the videos. Here are the rest of the links, in case they work.

Let's try this

I finally deleted some of the videos, and now I'm going to attach just the links to the videos, so let's see if this will work. This one is of how big Kronk is.

Kronk pouncing

We suspect that our dog must be part cat or rabbit or some other jumpy animal. Only that would explain this pouncing.

Rally week

Our church has two weeks of "Rally Week" at the start of each semester of small groups--in January and in September. This was the first of the two Rally weeks for this semester, and I love it. Usually it's a great time to see all of the cool & creative small groups there are out there. This time, though, we already knew what groups we were going to be in, so it took some of the suspense away. Our "Marriage Matters" small group is a long-term one that will continue for another year. I'm doing the quilting one again so that I can eventually finish all of the quilts for my family. I'm also doing a "What to really expect when you're expecting" group with the other 5 pregnant women at my church, which will be led by a midwife who also attends our church (don't worry--it's not a natural childbirth class, it's just going over the basics). Anyway, this semester there were probably 20 different tables set up with those science project display boards promoting sign-ups for their group. The groups range from Bunko to guitar to inner-city ministry to the Crown financial study. Plus, my favorite part is that everyone puts snacks out at their table! No need for lunch on these Sundays...

The lake

We took the dogs to one of the lakes on base last weekend--they always love it. You can tell Smalls does not want to come home. Kronk was quite picturesque running across the bridge, though.

"End of the Spear"

We went with some friends to see "End of the Spear" on Friday night. I was very familiar with the story, but Jon wasn't, so it was neat to compare our perspectives & experiences. For those of you that don't know the story, there were 5 men martyred in Ecuador in the 50s (including Jim Elliot and Nate Saint; this movie is told through the perspective of Nate Saint/Nate's son), whose wives later went in and ministered to tribe. I thought the movie was very well done, and definitely recommend it.

Grrr

Can anyone tell my why my links and things that are normally at the side of my blog jumped down to the bottom? Jon posted the videos--do they have something to do with it? Anyone know how to fix it?

The Island

Jon I rented this movie this past weekend, and I'd say we both recommend it. It's a great moral dilemma/conversation starter, and all in all a pretty good movie.

Ultrasound

Kronk as a puppy--6 months

New free camera

Last fall I completed an online course through my region (rather than district) called "Proficiency Express". I was under the impression it'd give me some wonderful, advanced, technological skills. Turns out it was a VERY basic course and covered things like Word documents, Excel, Powerpoint, and using a digital camera. The only bright lights were a massive amount of CLUs, and a digital camera (I found out halfway through). At our last meeting (when we were supposed to pick up said camera), they taught us how to use these huge, clunky cameras that used a little CD to store pictures rather than, say, a memory stick. They said our cameras were backordered, and they'd be delivered once they came in. This week I got my camera, which looks NOTHING like the clunkers. In fact, it is stinking awesome. It's a Sony Cybershot, 7.2 megapixel. Needless to say, it'll probably be used just as much in my home as it will my classroom.
I included my hand in the picture because my brother is constantly bugging me about perspective--you can never tell how small/large something is with nothing to gauge it by. And I thought my hand would be better than the yogurt container that is sitting here, too.

Beauty and the Geek

Jon and I love this show. We started our addiction a little way into the first season (we've seen about 3/4 of them). So last night we were very excited for the season 2 premiere. It's the only reality show that we watch, besides Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. I think I love it because you feel so sorry for the nerdy guys, and cheer as their confidence grows, and while the girls can drive you nuts with their ditzyness, some of them that do try can really grow on you. Plus, I feel like it's actually about healthy change--not just making people eat worms or something. If you haven't seen it, you should give it a try--Thursdays a 9/8 central. We've set up our DVR to record it each week. Along with Scrubs.

Another Oregon picture

"You couldn't hear a dump truck driving through a nitroglycerin plant!"

Somewhat tragic news

So, now that I have a lot of $ in Starbucks gift cards, I'm not in the mood for coffee. I'm so upset! I've had my mug in my car all week, ready to go, and each morning when I leave I think, "Nah, I don't really feel like it." What is going on!? I also bought strawberry Nesquik, which my mother and Jon love, but I've never really cared for. And that's all I wanted yesterday (and today, for that matter). This is really weird.

On a different note, Jon spent some of his Christmas money on a leaf blower/vacuum. So now he can go out and vacuum the yard, and the handy little machine sucks up the leaves, mulches them, and spits them into a bag. I suspect he bought it because he knew I would think it was cool and want to use it...

We told everyone at church that we were pregnant yesterday, which was really fun--especially the youth group kids. But a word of warning--don't drink the water at my church. I'll be the 5th of 6 people to have a baby in our church between April and September. One is due in April, two in May, one is due 4 days before me, and the other lady who just announced this week is due sometime in September. I'm not sure whether to be glad that my kid will have friends, or jealous that the spotlight is having to be shared with so many others. Maybe when it comes to advice time I'll be glad I'm not the only one--although I'm the only one who's having her first baby. Jon and I joked that at our shower everything will be regifted from the previous four showers. Or we'll end up with some crazy group shower. Interesting.

We are also on 5 daycare waiting lists now. Who knew you had to call so early? It was an interesting experience/thought to look at the emergency card and choose people who could pick up your kid. I mean, we have plenty of friends, but who would we want to go get our kid? Who has the right "equipment"? Not our childless friends. Who lives closest, where it wouldn't be a huge deal for them to drive it? Those of you with grown kids are laughing at me because you realize it's not a big deal and they'll never need to use those people. But I'm pretty sure I'm allowed to be at least a little neurotic with the first one.

USC

Grrr. Staying up until 11:30 to watch their defense fall apart was not my favorite thing. So now I'm tired and sad.

Baby

Today's ultrasound gave us a definite due date of July 18, 2006. Not that due dates really mean anything... The checkup went really well, and he said I'm having a normal, regular pregnancy. Hooray. The ultrasound was amazing (probably because it actually looked like a baby and not a grain of rice). After much prodding and poking which made me giggle, we woke the baby up and it moved around a lot for us. We got to heard the heartbeat--they even announced "162" like I knew what it meant. I figure if they say it out loud, it must be okay. It's the whispers you have to worry about, right? Anyway, after spending more than two hours in the office, we were glad to have some good stuff to say.

The rest of our vacation in Oregon

Since I've been lazy & busy, I'll just give a brief synopsis sans pictures about the rest of our visit in Oregon. I'm sure I'll forget at least three things. Mondayafternoon we headed in to Portland, and had dinner with my/our friends Dave & Sarah Budd. It was great to see their family (last time I saw them Ellen was like a week old)--their kids look just like they do on the blog. We ate Papa Murphy's and played poker well into the night/early morning. Jon and I should NOT go to Vegas. Tuesday I was able to spend the day with Sarah and the kids, which was really fun. She gave me the scoop on baby things--what's good & what's not, what to look for, etc. Jon played with Jimmie. The rest of the week was filled with visits, Christmas with our friends, trips to Spaghetti Factory & TGIFriday's (although I forgot the coupons my sister gave me and had to give them to Kim...). I got to have coffee and hang out with Sarah and Jessica, so that now they'll be able to call each other without being scared :).

We did have a little stomach bug pass through the family over the holiday--not very fun. I was also sick on the plane ride home, and had to buy new pajama pants in the Atlanta airport. Also not very fun. However, the Delta flight attendants were very helpful and kind and deserve a high five. So does my husband for sitting by stinky wife.

We got in to Little Rock at around 8pm, looked for the car that was left for us for over an hour, went and got our car, then waited around at the airport to pick up the people who owned the first car, who actually live in Little Rock. Confused? Good. We decided to drive back home that night, even thought it meant getting in at about 2:30am. There's just something about your own bed. So we rang in the New Year in our car somewhere along I-30 in Arkansas.

When we got home, we learned that we are still looking for a good dog/house sitter. Apparently she didn't even stay here (I wanted to say, "Do you think we'd buy a house somewhere that wasn't safe!? Give me some credit!" but that's probably because my feelings were hurt). She'd let the dogs in at night and shut them in our room, then come back in the morning before work and put them outside. When we got home our bed was covered in muddy dog prints--which I guess could have happened anyway. And our room REEKED of dog. Anyway, we'll start taking applications for next year right now.
